Goal Setting for Achieving Growth and Development Essay
Setting goals is an important activity that everyone should engage in to achieve growth and development. In setting our goals, we should think critically on the type of goals we set to avoid disappointment which can reduce one’s morale to develop.
We should make sure the goals we are setting are ours and are not as a result of the influence of another party.
One should also have a reason for setting the goals and the goals set should be encouraging to engage in, because if they are boring, then one might lose interest in developing the goal.
When the goal is set, one should be able to visualize himself enjoying the benefits from the target after the specified time has elapsed, to avoid engaging in unachievable ventures (Robbins & Coulter, 2009)
In setting goals, we should have a method or some kind of approach to enable one to choose fruitful goals. The best method of goal setting is the SMART goal setting process. The acronym stands for:
M-Measurable
A-Attainable, but challenging
R-Rewarding
This model can be used to set any type of goals, and whether personal or professional they are all achievable. For example, I would like to set a specific goal which is opening a new branch for my fashion business, and I expect to be worth half a million dollars by the end of this year.
T hat is not enough to set a specific goal; hence I should set a measurement to determine my success in the undertaking.
I should be able to measure the operations of the new branch to determine my progress. Measuring the goal would entail taking into account all the sales, costs and revenues from the new branch.
My goal should also be attainable in that; it should be easy to achieve and manage to avoid discouragement, but they should not be too easy to achieve otherwise that would be wastage of resources and time.
However, our goals should not be complicated or set to a very high mark that is not realistic.
In setting my goal I considered that it took me a year and a half to achieve a half a million worth business in my first venture hence now that am more experienced, I should be able to achieve that in a year if all other things remain constant (Robbins & Coulter, 2009).
One should also be able to predict whether the goal will be achievable through measurement and if it appears otherwise, then the strategies used should be changed. Goals set should also be rewarding; they should yield benefits or revenues.
This is the main reason for setting goals, and hence one should evaluate the progress of the venture.
Rewards depend on the type of goal, or venture one is involved in, and for my purpose, I should be able to determine the revenues of my new parlor to know whether am making profits and how I can to make the profits more so that the business can expand more.
The achievement of goals should be timely, and this involves setting deadlines or a time frame in which the goals should be achieved. Otherwise one can spend too much time on one venture instead of using that time to perform other activities.
The time frame will also be determined by the type of goals set; for example, one can not expect to lose weight in two weeks nor can you wait for five years without any change in the weight.
My goal is business oriented, and in setting the time frame, I should consider all eventualities that characterize the fashion market and also consider previous experience; my time frame is one year. The approach is very effective because it is easy to analyze, logical and applicable.
Once we have set the goals we need to make plans on how to achieve them and planning can be managerial or operational; managerial planning is done by the managers and in my case am obligated to do that, while the operational planning involves the first level managers and who are not present in my business because it is not very big to have such employees hence I and the sales staff will do that since they are the only employees.
We should always set well-written goals for easy planning of their implementation.
In planning developing plans to pursue a goal, we should always consider the level of the business the environmental uncertainties and any other future commitment because this is some of the major factors that are likely to influence the implementation of our plans (Robbins & Coulter, 2009)
In making good goals we should review the mission of the organization, in this case, the business, we should also consider the available resources required for the implementation of the goals and finally other people that will be involved in its implementation should also be involved in setting the goal.
Goal setting is very important to achieve success hence the need for proper planning, implementation, and evaluation of our goals. By using the smart approach, one will always stay motivated to achieve the goals and is less likely to fail.
The approach encourages creativity and allows for flexibility hence enables you to work at your pace and capacity while still keeping you alert. It is a good method and very recommendable especially for in setting business goals.

Every individual needs to set some goals towards the achievement of a desired result. Setting personal goals can provide greater achievement with the use of SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-oriented) goals which help the individual focus on what they want to learn or achieve. The objective of using SMART goals is helping plan for relevant learning activities and to allow one measure the results and progress in achieving the learning goals (College of Nurses of Ontaroio, 2014). This paper aims to help the author develop my own personal leadership development by learning how to use SMART goals effectively in achieving my learning objectives. My goal is to enhance my knowledge and skills on CPR by taking a training course that will help me become a certified CPR instructor that will help me impart my learning outcomes with my colleagues within the healthcare setting. Goal setting is a key factor in developing leadership skills because goals give a leader direction and focus on specific actions that can help achieve a desired result, implement effective strategies and develop realistic action plans with achievable results. With goal setting, a leader will be able to identify actions that are relevant to the target results. In order to help me develop my own personal strengths towards achieving my own leadership development, this paper will focus on developing my leadership SMART goals towards competency in delivering patient centered care, which is one of the initiatives of the Institute of Medicine's quality initiative for the healthcare profession competencies. The advocacy of delivering patient centered care has been growing in the healthcare system with evidences providing for its effectiveness in helping patients recover more efficiently from their ailments. According to Shaller (2007), among the contributing factors towards patient centered care include leadership, strategic vision, involvement of the family members, systemic measurement and feedback and supportive technology. The concept of patient centered care is considered to be an important dimension for high quality health care service. Reflecting on these dimensions, Houser and Oman (2011) provide that there are essential dimensions of patient centered care that include the respect for the patient's values and expressed needs, coordination and integration of care, communication, information, education, physical comfort, involvement of family and friends and access to care. In view of these concepts about delivering patient centered care, I have developed my own SMART goals towards developing my leadership skills. My specific goal is to become a CPR instructor by March 2016. This certification will enhance my training and skills in teaching my colleagues in providing quality life saving care to our patients in the event that they stop breathing. I aim to work collaboratively with experienced certified instructors. As an initial step, I have already completed the one day introduction to CPR for CPR instructors. This is the initial step that I take that is more specific as it requires a concrete action towards the attainment of my desired goals. To make a goal more specific, one needs to narrow down the focus in attaining the well defined areas through specific performance. A goal is specific if the objectives or plans involve what is to be done or achieved (Oh, 2015). My specific goal is to become a CPR instructor so that I can focus in delivering quality patient care by helping coordinate with my colleagues the integrated care that we can provide to save life in case of emergencies. My performance and learning outcomes will be measured by practical exercises and by the written exams that will be given after the training session. This will provide me a feedback on how well I have learned and discover areas of improvements. My rating from the class will give me a tangible evidence on my learning progress and in determining whether I have accomplished my goals towards developing better skills and competency in my field of practice. The competency examination and clinical exercises will make my learning more measurable and observable that can indicate how far I have achieved towards the accomplishment of my goals. A goal is attainable when there are resources available that can help develop one’s skills and performance within his area of practice. To be achievable the outcome must be something that is attainable and realistic. The person should feel challenged enough to develop the appropriate skills, knowledge and abilities that will allow the accomplishment of the steps to be carried out. If the goal is not attainable or achievable, there is a high chance of not accomplishing it. As a result, this can become a source of demotivation because the desired result is not practically achievable and no person will likely strive for goals that is not attainable. As pointed out by Rouillard (2003), realistic goals are practical, possible, attainable and motivate people in reaching an achievable end. The objectives of the goal should be one that a person is willing and capable of accomplishing. There is no limit as to the level of one's learning goals. It can be high but realistic, provided that there is a possibility in its accomplishment. Setting a higher goal is more achievable because it provides a higher motivational force (Shields, et al., 2016). Realistic goals also translate to the applicable current role that one assumes in his profession. When setting realistic goals, it is crucial that one believes it is attainable and possible to be accomplished. I have a strong belief that my goals are realistic because it has a valuable and practical application to my field of profession. I can also complete the training session with the support of my directors and peers. Once I become a CPR instructor I will be able to demonstrate leadership competency by teaching CPR to my co-workers and ensuring they are performing it correctly. Becoming a CPR instructor is a practical goal that I have chosen based on my current profession and relevance to the role I perform in line with my duties and responsibilities. A goal is realistic based on the person setting the goal (Cross Training, 2008). Within my own perspectives, I believe my goals are realistic because it is not only attainable and possible to accomplish, but it is also relevant to my field of work. I believe in my capabilities that I can impart my knowledge and skills significantly to my colleagues after I finish the training session. This is also a motivating factor that helps me pursue to accomplish the ends that I seek to achieve with my SMART goals. A goal should also be time bound. This means that the goal should be with a specific time frame and a deadline. This is important in preventing one from delaying what could be done by taking the necessary action for the accomplishment of the goal. As a process, a goal that is time bound will encourage the consistent evaluation of one's progress and to motivate oneself towards the completion of the target goal. I set my goals to be accomplished by March 2016 by passing the three examinations and upon the validation of a certified instructor supporting my capability of becoming a competent CPR instructor and be issued a CPR instructor card. It is also essential that the time frame set for the goal is realistic. Within the given period it is possible for me to finish the training session and to assess my progress through the result of the examinations that I will be taking. My goals are time bound because it involves sufficient time to help me finish what I want to achieve, that is, to complete the training required to become a CPR instructor.

The Importance of Setting SMART Goals for Personal and Professional Success
1. introduction.
There is a simple yet effective process of setting and achieving goals. Whether it is long-term or short-term goals, the outcome of defining, setting, and tracking your goals will greatly be influenced by following what is typically referred to as SMART criteria. The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. This article will show you what it means and why each of these is important if you are to design and set goals that will result in personal as well as professional success. SMART is a great tool that is considered one of the most effective for people who want to achieve specific objectives. SMART also guarantees better results and is particularly helpful in keeping an individual more focused when pursuing targets. SMART goals reciprocate exactly with what the acronym stands for because they are: S: Specific M: Measurable A: Achievable R: Realistic T: Timely
1.1. Definition of SMART Goals
S – Specific (or Significant): Goals should be clear and specific so that you know without a doubt that you hit your target. Specifically defined goals should answer a series of ‘W’ questions – What do I want to achieve? Why is this goal important? Who is involved? Where is it located? What resources are available/needed? What are the requirements and parameters? The more clear your goal is, the more focused you are and the better the chances of hitting your target. M – Measurable (or Meaningful): If it can be measured, it can be managed. You need a way to determine what has been accomplished, and so making goals measurable is important. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your ultimate goal. A – Achievable (or Acceptable, Attainable, Agreed, or Assignable): Goals that are achievable help to stimulate motivation and foster the dedication needed to achieve what you have never achieved before. Goals should be challenging, yet achievable. R – Realistic (or Relevant, Reasonable, Resourced, and Result-based): Goals should be realistic, should be consistent with other organizational and individual goals, taking sense of what can be accomplished. Realistic goals are chances that can be successfully accomplished and reach while considering other constraints. T – Time-bound (or Timely, Time-oriented, and Timed, Time-based, Pertinent): Goals need time targets. "Flying by the seat of your pants" is often the result of not specifically dedicating a time for its completion. They are of no use if the completion date is vague or the time frames keep changing. Backward from the deadline date and plot specific waypoints to ensure completion on time.
2. Benefits of Setting SMART Goals
# Clarity Specific goals clearly state what is to be achieved, are concrete in their description, and address the five "W" questions - who, what, where, when, and why. They represent tangible and feasible outcomes and will ensure informed and better decisions. # Commitment Individuals who set goals will develop action-oriented strategies designed to become proficient in achieving their targeted tasks. A commitment is made to develop and embark upon a strategic plan for accomplishment. The person who sets the goal becomes focused on this commitment whether the goal is corporate, team, or individually set. # Acceptable Performance Standard By setting a goal, you identify the quality of the performance expected. A goal is used to define and set the desired standards of an individual's performance. When setting a goal, the objective is to be certain individuals comprehend the performance requirements. Goals are used to convey the necessary level of performance. # Defining Objectives Specific, detailed, relative objectives are identified with good goals. Objectives need to be measurable and trackable, enabling individuals to have structured milestones throughout the process of achieving set goals. # Define Timelines Individuals and organizations need to be time conscious. Generally, without timelines, there is no sense of the anticipatory time required for the goal to succeed. Goals make individuals and teams aware of the time demands and the urgency of progressing toward their specific endpoint. Set timelines are motivating factors.
2.1. Personal Success
Setting SMART goals allows you to be clear about what you want and have greater clarity about your priorities and where you should spend your time. It also provides a clear expectation of success - or if you are successful at achieving the goal. It defines what is expected and provides direction. It can help you to be more motivated because it can promote self-confidence, determination, and a willingness to strive toward the long-term goal. With a SMART goal, you can work on achieving something specific, feel accomplished in ticking it off your list, and experience the satisfaction that comes with achieving something you worked hard for. It can also reduce procrastination, improve your ability to cope with stress, and improve your ability to communicate and create a bridge of understanding with others. SMART goals also specify the route to your personal success. It instructs you on what you need to do here today to reach this result by then. SMART goals also foster confidence. Goals provide the organization of our dreams and hopes. Goals need articulation. A defined goal demands that the goaler identify how to prepare for goal achievement, it demands how we are to behave until we reach that goal, and it demands that we believe in our ability to reach it. SMART goals also build character. Goals demand adherence to a schedule. Adherence to a goal builds the habits of adherence. Such habits help make us who we are, who we want to be.
2.2. Professional Success
When it comes to your professional world, using the same techniques for goal-setting that you did for career success can help you reach milestones more easily than if you hadn't been as detailed about their achievement. When you're in your career or own a business, professional and personal are not as easily separated as if you were working a job with little sense of ownership. You can keep a small business goal journal, a career achievement list, or a place for whatever you need to complete in order to reach your goals, regardless of what the calendar has for you. While many people visit the same practitioner, a hair stylist for instance, many others are embarking on fields that are very different from where they are in other ways. The premium time that we owe them for their attention often means limited ability to give your entire story during your visit, and certainly not in depth. Rely on the goal setting that you did when setting out on this path to help you be more successful than if you hadn't. By keeping detailed plans, you can take steps when they're most convenient and not just when you have a free moment.
3. Strategies for Setting and Achieving SMART Goals
Admittedly, the concept of setting and achieving goals is nothing new, but the term SMART goals comes from the expert who created the concept back in 1981. In this article, I will share with you strategies for how to develop and achieve your SMART goals for personal and professional success. Take action today for a better life and career tomorrow. 1. Get very clear on what it is you want. When you can define clearly what you want, the easier it is for you to know when you have reached it. Put specifics to your goal in terms of the area of life and/or work you want it to impact, how much, and how often you will need to do something to achieve it. Craft your SMART goal in such a way that you can easily picture what achieving it should look like. If the achievement of your goal does not appeal in your mind, you need to go back to the drawing board and modify your goal until it does. 2. Evaluate whether you or your team has the ability to achieve the goal. This could be the technical ability, prior experience of a similar endeavor, the understanding and support of decision makers, and the necessary tools and resources. SMART goals are attainable at some level; otherwise, they then become just dreams. An increase in the skill set of you or the team may be one area that can be addressed before starting your journey; the acquisition of this may be the goal instead. Another leading cause of an unattainable goal is an appropriate amount of time has not been allocated to the necessary tasks to achieve the goal.

What Do We Need SMART Goals For?
Setting achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals can be challenging, especially if you want to undertake a significant endeavor. Selecting a specific target is one thing, but conceptualizing every step from the start to the finish line results in either vague or unrealistic goals.
SMART goals definition includes a framework that allows you to set objectives around five elements. These include specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and valuable. The SMART formula keeps you focused on your efforts, uses your time well, and meets all deadlines.
But are SMART goals important? For a starter, the SMART goal-setting process helps you avoid vagueness by helping you understand what you must do and when to do it for the ultimate goal.
What are SMART Goals? 5 Rules For Setting Goals
Let's walk through what are SMART goals. The SMART goals acronym stands for:
The framework helps define these parameters as they relate to your goals and keep them attainable within a specific time frame.
It's essential to keep each of these parameters in mind whenever you write SMART goals for yourself or your team. They are quantitative 'terms' that guarantee you achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals by eliminating generalization and guesswork.
The framework assigns a clear timeline that'll set you up for success if you strictly follow it. Below is an in-depth look into the SMART goals framework and how to leverage it for personal growth and success.
S for Specific
S in the SMART goals framework stands for specific, representing the initial step in the goal-setting process. By being specific, you're simply trying to avoid vagueness and the generalities associated with setting goals.
You need to create SMART goals in clear, quantifiable terms to determine and re-evaluate what actions to take. Otherwise, you'll find it challenging to focus your efforts where they are most needed. When drafting a measurable goal, try to answer the five common "W" questions, including:
- What needs to be accomplished?
- Why are SMART goals important?
- Who is responsible for achieving the SMART goal?
- What steps should I take to accomplish this goal?
- What are the expected requirements or obstacles I'll face along the way?
Remember that a clear goal is simple, sensible, and significant. For instance, your specific smart goal example of becoming a top-rated copywriter on any platform should first begin with acquiring the necessary skills and experience to enable you to become a top-rated copywriter.
M For Measurable
The next step in setting SMART goals is to ensure they are measurable. This means you can easily track your progress and see how far you've advanced. Here, it would be best if you had a SMART goals worksheet that keeps you focused and excited about achieving them.
A lack of measurable goals means you won't be able to determine if you're making progress or not. To make your goals measurable, ask yourself the following questions:
- What do I need to measure and track progress?
- How will I know when the goal is accomplished?
If possible, set milestones along the way to help you track progress and make necessary amendments. A smart goal example is by estimating that you'll have finished learning the essential skills and earned experience within three years, you may assess your progress towards becoming a top-rated copywriter.
Remember that setting SMART goals should be fun if you learn to treat yourself in small significant ways as you move closer to your desired outcome. Here is a smart goals template showing each element:
S - SPECIFIC - What is your target?
M - MEASURABLE - How will you measure and track performance?
A - ACHIEVABLE - Is the goal achievable, considering various factors?
R - RELEVANT - Does the SMART goal example align with other personal or small business goals?
T - TIME-BOUND - What will be the beginning and end of the goal?
A For Achievable
Your set goals are only bound to succeed if they are realistic and attainable. This means you should not overstretch your abilities, even as you remain optimistic about fulfilling them. When you create SMART goal example that is achievable, you're boosting your morale and putting yourself in a better position.
The more realistic and achievable the goal, the more likely you will keep working toward it. Try to identify strengths and understand the challenges that may come along the way. Similarly, remain accountable from the initial goal-setting phase and ensure your SMART goals answer the following questions:
- How can I accomplish this goal and celebrate wins?
- How realistic is the goal, based on existing obstacles?
For example, ask yourself whether developing the skills required to become a top-rated copywriter is realistic and if you have all it takes to get there and achieve overall growth. Do I fall short of all the necessary resources to accomplish this goal?
R For Relevant
Your SMART goals must be relevant, meaning they should matter to you. They should ideally align with your values and larger, long-term goals. If a goal doesn't contribute toward your broader objectives, you might rethink it.
Ask yourself why the objective is essential to you, how achieving it will help you and how it will contribute toward your long-term goals. You can easily share your plans with others to hear their input, but it's essential to retain control over them. A relevant goal should answer the following questions:
- Are the goals wasted time?
- Do they match my efforts?
- Am I the right person to achieve the goal?
For example, it's a good thing to aspire to learn the skills of becoming a top-rated copywriter. However, is it the right time to undertake the required training? Have you considered other plans? Is there anything that would be competing with your time to make this more difficult?
T For Time-Bound
Any achievable goal has a definite time frame for a deadline to concentrate on. This is a crucial element of the SMART goal framework that prevents any other activity from taking precedence over your long-term objectives.
So, start by setting a target date to find the motivation and help you prioritize. However, be keen on developing realistic timeframes, considering all the unexpected roadblocks. Time-bound goals seek to answer these questions:
- When am I hoping to achieve this goal?
- What can I do from now onwards?
- What can I do in six months?
For example, learning the skills to become a top-rated copywriter may require additional experience. How long will it take you to acquire these skills? Should you invest in more learning to be eligible for specific qualifications? Time-bounded marketing SMART goals will ensure all the lofty ideas are broken down into actionable steps to make milestone tracking easier and more efficient.

Guide on How to Set SMART GOALS
Achieving success in any area of your life requires having specific, well-defined goals. Setting precise and successful goals will help you achieve your objectives, whether working alone or with a team. At first, creating SMART goals that get results might be complicated and intimidating. Follow this guide on setting SMART goals for yourself if you're feeling stuck.
Think of Goals That Can Motivate You
A goal is a clear, written statement of what you want to attain in a given time frame. Everything you plan on doing henceforth must be aligned with these goals. Without them, you will have no clear direction or way to measure your success. So the first step is to think of plans that can motivate you.
For smart business goals, it helps to ask yourself these questions:
- What is the one thing we want our customers to feel after using our product or service?
- What do we want our team to feel about working for our company?
- What do we want our investors to think about when investing in us?
- How do we plan to attract new customers and ensure unending customer loyalty?
Write them Down
After deciding what you want to achieve, please write down your goals to have a second view of what they entail. For example, it could be a smart goal to increase revenue by 25% by the end of the year by increasing the number of leads through the website for your small businesses. Or a personal goal to learn a new skill for a better work-life balance in the next six months. Also, if you are wondering - ‘how to do my math homework ,’ our team of experts can do it for you in a flash.
A written, measurable, and time-bound goal with a definite deadline takes you closer to actualizing it. When you set a deadline, you create the necessary urgency, which can be a powerful motivator. It also forces you to prioritize, create urgency, inspire confidence, make you accountable, and, most important, clarify your success metrics.
Set an Elaborate Action Plan
Now that you know your achievable goals, you're ready to turn them into actionable steps to increase sales. At this point, you shouldn't go off track and start thinking about the strategy you will use to achieve your SMART goal. Focus on the actions that you need to take to reach your goal. You'll find that it's much easier to stay focused this way. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What resources do I need to make this happen?
- What are the first few steps I need to take to achieve this goal?
- What are the smaller steps that will lead to the bigger goal?
Once you've set a SMART goal, it's crucial to go ahead and implement it. This shouldn't be difficult if the plans meet all the standards of a SMART goal framework. Similarly, ensure you measure your progress to know if you're on track.
Failure to track your progress can lead to frustration and uncertainty. There are lots of ways to track your progress, including:
- Write down your goal and the specific actions you'll take to reach it.
- Drawing a visual representation of your purpose and the path to get there
- Writing a SMART goal journal
- Working with a coach or mentor
So, why is it important to set SMART goals? Successful people know that goal-setting is time bound and integral for achieving success. When you know exactly what you want to accomplish by being an active team member, you will have a clear direction and more ways to measure your success. Now that you understand how to write a brilliant plan, it's time to start.
When you reach your goal, don't forget to celebrate! This allows you to reflect on what you've accomplished. You've probably completed more than most people do their entire lives.
