Impact of social media on children and adolescents mental health, introduction.

Social media is a catch-all term used to describe the digital platforms, websites, or apps that people use to connect to one another, and to create and share content.

There have been major concerns about social media since its invention. They have large impact on the usage, impact and well-being of adolescents and young adults. Social media has become an integrated part of daily life, with an estimated 3 billion social media users worldwide. Adolescents and young adults are the most active users of social media. Research on social media has grown rapidly, with the potential association of social media use and mental health and well-being becoming a polarized and much-studied subject. The imbalances of emotions that social media apps create in minds of people are dangerous and can cause severe harm and have immense psychological impact on the population that uses social media. Adolescents and children can use social media to find community, but their mental health is often negatively affected by this culture of comparison.

The World Health Organization (WHO, 2017) reported that 10–20% of children and adolescents worldwide experience mental health problems. The most common disorders in children and adolescents are generalized anxiety disorder and depression, respectively. According to the Royal Society for Public Health, & Young Health Movement (2017), the prevalence of anxiety and depression has increased by 70% in the past 25 years in young people. Depression and anxiety have adverse consequences on adolescent development, including lower educational attainment, school dropout, impaired social relationships, and increased risk of substance abuse, mental health problems and suicide.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Most children and adolescents can moderate their use of social media, so it doesn’t take over their lives. However, 20% of people who have at least one social media account feel they have to check them at least once every three hours to avoid feeling anxious. This phenomenon goes beyond “fear of missing out,” or FOMO.

The activity of young people on social media largely mirrors their lives in the physical world: children and teenagers navigate the streams of their social networks, establishing new relationships, strengthening existing ones, and sometimes minimizing or ending them. Whether online or in the real world, young people will encounter bad behaviour, whether it’s directed at them or at someone or something else. How they respond to the bad behaviour is an opportunity for them to learn important life skills.

Reasons for the apparently growing psychological morbidity in young people are not known conclusively. Undeterred by stigma, many young people feel free to discuss their psychological difficulties and seek professional help. Another important factor is the ease of sharing personal experiences in the digital information age. Whereas in the past mental health problems were suffered in isolation, today a struggling younger person can readily find others with similar problems, either through social interaction or support groups.

NEED OF THE STUDY

Usage of social media among people is increasing due the fast evolution of technology and profound changes between people’s communication. Social media is being used increasingly by adolescents and children. Social media has a reinforcing nature. Using it activates the brain’s reward centre by releasing dopamine, a “feel-good chemical” linked to pleasurable activities such as food, and social interaction. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are associated with anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments. This study helps to understand the relationship between social media usage and depression.

Social media, beside positive effects can pose risks for vulnerable population groups, such as children and adolescents. This study helps us to identify how social media has a negative impact on mental health of children and adolescents.

This Study consistently highlight the use of social media, especially heavy use and prolonged time spent on social media platforms, appears to contribute to increased risk for a variety of mental health symptoms and poor wellbeing, especially among young people.
