Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science is created to provide the knowledge and abilities required for data science research and discovery. The programme also offers substantial applied training that is aimed toward interdisciplinary collaboration because the program’s ultimate goal is to extract information and facilitate discovery from complex data.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science gives broad exposure to key concepts and tools from Data analytics, AI, Machine Learning, and more knowledge and abilities to conduct data science-related research and discovery. The objective of this program is to discover information and facilitate innovation from complicated data and to discover in-depth knowledge of data-driven science about research and scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured. The program aims to produce data research professionals who are passionate about drawing meaningful insights from data using data science approach.
For successful completion of PhD candidate should publish minimum four research articles in Scopus indexed journals, with Lincoln University College affiliation.

PROGRAM SUMMARY
The Faculty of Information Science and Technology offers 2 programmes, the Master Programme and Doctor of Philosophy Programme.
The goal of the PhD programme is to prepare the next generation of leading researchers. The PhD is a programme of an independent, self-directed academic research degree, supported by a team of supervisors that makes an original contribution to knowledge written up in a publishable thesis and high impact journals. The PhD programme also supports the development of research and generic skills to equip students to operate successfully as a professional researcher in any setting.
LIFE AT THE FACULTY
The Faculty of Information Science and Information Technology is a stimulating environment in which new ideas, experimental designs, and robust systems are plentiful.
Our teaching programmes are always among the top in Malaysia. We also enjoy strong links with industries, which helps to ensure that our research and teaching is well informed and relevant to the needs of society.
Life for undergraduate majors centers around the various educational computing facility which is housed in the faculty. Apart from the major academic courses, all undergraduate students will participate in various Special Interest Groups (SIGs), aiming to promote students in applying and fostering their skills dan knowledge to industries and communities.
These SIGs ranging from Intelligent Machines Club, Cyber Hack & Ethics to Video Innovation inculcate creativities and innovations of our students. In the final year of the four years of the undergraduate programs, students will embark on a final year project and five months of industrial attachment.
Life for postgraduate students will mainly focus on the three research centers within the faculty: the Center for Artificial Intelligence (CAIT), the Center for Software Technology & Management (SOFTAM), and the Center for Cyber Security (Siber). Students will belong to either of these research centers which support conducive and supportive research environments.
Programme Requirement
A person who intends to apply for a doctoral programme should have the following qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
- other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree or other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or
- a student currently pursuing full time master’s programme under sub regulation 6 (a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/ Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/ Director; or
- Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/ Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board
- any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
- fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
- fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:
a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or
b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.
2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:
a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;
b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or
c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.
The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

About Programme: This programme is offered in response to the emerging trends in advanced applications of ICT technologies to enhance intelligence and analytical capabilities in business decision-making. The program will help you understand how to apply Big Data analytical methods and strategies for advanced data analysis and visualization, implement quantitative modeling and data analysis techniques to business problems, communicate findings and effectively present results using data visualization techniques and use of advanced statistical tools and data programming techniques to solve practical problems in data analysis.
Course Content: The programme requires 40 credits. The courses for year one include big data across verticals and domains, data quality, unstructured data analytics, Islamic world’s view on IT and Society, data warehousing and modelling, tools for data science, visualization for decision making, data security and governance. The year two courses include datathon and bootcamp.
Duration: 2 years (Full-Time) and 3 years (Part-time)
Course Fees: RM 18,120 (Local Students) and RM 28,400 (International Students)

About Programme: This university is situated in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur and it allows full-time mode classes for the students who wish to strengthen their career prospects in data science to acquire in-depth knowledge and skills to analyse, visualize and transform vast quantities of data in different fields into valuable insights.
Course Content: The credits of the course counts as Core Course (24 Credits), Elective Course (8 Credits) and Data Science Research Project (10 Credits). The core courses include research methodology, principles of data science, data analytics, programming for data science, data mining, machine learning for data science and big data management. The elective courses include parallel and distributed computing, big data applications and analytics, network and security and numerical optimization. However, it is to be noted that not all courses will be offered every semester, the actual courses offered will depend on the availability of the staff and the number of students registering.
Duration: 6 semesters
Course Fees: The tuition fee in Malaysian ringgits (RM) is RM 18,897.00 ( For Citizens ) and RM 33,270 ( For Non-Citizens )

Course Content: This is a 40 credit programme which includes courses such as fundamental of data science, statistical methods for data analytics, unstructured data analytics, information modelling & databases, big data analytics and management, machine learning for data science., decision support & business intelligence.
Duration: 1-2 years(Full-Time) and 2-4 years (Part-Time)
Course Fees: RM 24,000 (Local Students) and RM 32,000 (International Students)
8| Master of Science (Data Science and Analytics) By Universiti Sains Malaysia
About Programme: The programme aims to produce specialists in the field of Big Data Analytics capable who can make data-driven decisions and apply advanced big data analysis across many domains.
Course Content: The course includes principles and practices of data science and analytics, big data storage and management, big data storage, and management, enabling technologies and infrastructures for data science, data visualisation and visual analytics, business intelligence and decision analytics, predictive business analytics, text and speech analytics, and few others.
Duration: Min 3 semesters / Max 6 semesters (Full-Time)
Course Fees: RM 12,220.00 (Local students) and USD 5,157.50 (International Students).
